Atoms And Molecules

ATOMS are the smallest individual parts of an element .They are tiny, with diameters in the order of one  ten thousand  millionth of a metre(10^-10).Two or more atoms join together (bond) to form a molecule of substance known as compound. For example, when atoms of the elements hydrogen and fluorine join together, they form a molecule of the compound hydrogen fluoride. So molecule are the smallest individual parts of a compound.Atoms themselves are not indivisible-they possess an internal structure. At their centre is a dense neucleus, consisting of protons, which have a positive electric charge.,and neutrons, which are uncharged.Arround the neucleus are the negatively charged electrons. It is the electrons that give most of its physical and chemical properties. They do not follow definite path arround the neucleus.Instead electrons are found with in certain regions.called orbits. These are arranged arround the neucleus in "shells",each containg electrons of particular energy. For example the first shell(1) can hold up to two electrons,in a so called s-orbital(1s).The second shell (2) can hold up to eight electrons,in s-orbitals 2s and p-orbitals 2p.If an atom lose and electron it becomes positive iom(cation). If an electron is gained ,an atom becmes a negative ion(anion).Ions of opposite charges will atract and join together,in a type of bonding known as ionic bonding. In covalent bonding, the atoms bond by sharing of electrons in what become molecular orbitals.

Matter

MATTER is anything that has mass.It includes everything from natural substances, such as minerals or living organisms,to synthetic materials.Matter can exist in three distinct states - solid, liquid and gas.A solid is rigid and retains its shape.A liquid is  fluid, has definite volume, and will take the shape of its container.A gas also Fluid fills a space,so its volume will be the same as the volume of the container..Most substances can exist as a solid,a liquid or a gas:the state is determined by temperature. At very high temperatures, matter becomes plasma, often considered to be a fourth state of mater. All matter is composed of microscopic particles, such as atoms and molecules. This arrangement and interaction of these particles give a substance its physical and chemical properties.,by which matter can be identified. There is a huge variety of matter because particles can arrange themselves in coutless ways,in one substance or by mixing with others.Natural gasses, for example, seems to be a solid but is in fact ,a super cool liquid:the atoms  are not locked into a patter and can flow..Pure substances known as elements combine to form compounds or mixtures.Mixtures called colloids are made up of larger particles of matter suspended in a solid.,liquid,or gas, while a sollution is one substance dissolved in another.

Chemical reactions

A chemical reaction takes place ,when ever bonds between atoms are broken or made.In each case, atoms or groups of atoms rearrange, making new substance s(products)from the orginal ones (Reactants).Reaction happen naturally,or can be made to happen;they may take years ,or only an instant. Some of main types are shown here.A eaction usually involve a change in energy.in a burning reaction, for example, the making of new bonds between atoms releases energy as heat and light. This type of reaction ,in which heat is given off,is exothermic reaction. Many reaction like burning ,are inversible.Reactions can be used to form solids from sollution:in a double decomposition reaction, two compounds in sollution break down and re-form into two new substances, often create a precipitate (insoluble solid);in displacement,an element(eg:copper) displaces another element (eg.silver)from a sollution. The rate of (speed) of a reaction is determined by many different factors, such as temperature, and the size and shape of the reactants.to describe and keep track of reactions, internationally recogonized chemical symbols and equations are used.Reactions are also used in the laboratary to identify matter. An experiment with candle wax,for example, demonstrates that it contains carbon and hydrogen.

Galaxies

A Galaxy is a huge mass of stars ,nebulae, and interstellar material. The smallest galaxy contain about 100,000 stars,While a largest contain about 3,000 billion of stars ..There are three Main Type of galaxy, classified according to their shape:Ellipticat which are oval shaped;Spiral Which have arms spiralling outwards from a central buldge(those whose arms are spiral from a bar shaped bulge are called spiral);and irregular, which has no obivious shape. Some times the shape of the galaxy is distorted by the collision with another galaxies.Quasars(Quasistellar objects)Are thought to be galactic neuclei ,but they are too far away that thier exact natue is still uncertain. They are compact, highly luminiuos objects in the outer reaches of know universe:While the furthest known "odinary" galaxies are about 12 billion light years away, the furthest known quasar is about 13 billion light years away.Active galaxies, such as seyfert galaxies and radio galaxies ,Emit untense radiation. In Seyfert galaxy, this radiation come from the galactical neucleus ; In a radio galaxy,it comes from huge lobes on either side of the galaxy. The radiation from active galaxies and quasars is thought to be caused by material falling into central black holes.

Neutron Stars and Black Holes

NEUTRON STARS AND BLACK HOLES form from the stellar cores that remain after stars have exploded as spernovave. If the remaining core is between about one and a half of and three solar masses,it contrast to form a neutron star.If the remaining core is greater than about three solar masses ,it contract to form a black hole.
Neutron star are typically only about 10 kilometers in diamter and consist almost entirely of  subatomic particles called neutrons.Such stars are so dense that a tea teaspoonful would weigh about a billion tonnes.Neutron sta are observed as pulsers,so called because they rotate rapidly and emit two beams of radio waves which sweeps across the sky and are directed as short pulses.
black holes are characterised by their strong gravity, which is so powerfull even a light cannot escape;as a result black holes are invisible.how ever it can be detected if there is a close companion star. The gravity of the star pulls the gas from the other star, farming an accretion disc that spirals arround the black hole at high speed, heating up and emmiting radiation.eventually the matter spirals into cross the event horzon(the boundar of the black hole),There by disappearing from the visible universe.

Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.

Many of the Earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change, pushed by high population growth and economic development. By 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption.
The WED theme this year is therefore "Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care." Living within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future. Human prosperity need not cost the earth. Living sustainably is about doing more and better with less. It is about knowing that rising rates of natural resource use and the environmental impacts that occur are not a necessary by-product of economic growth.
